Ep. 58 - The Fighter
Thursday Aug 20, 2020
Thursday Aug 20, 2020
Hang on, man, two consecutive boxing flicks? Yeah, why not. The Fighter is 10 years old and it was heaped with plenty of critical and financial kudos back then. Does it still deserve those raves? Well, one of us was a lot more enthusiastic about David O. Russell's Raging Bull-esque hit than the other.
Russell works with his frequent leading man Mark Wahlberg again as Marky Mark lives in the skin of real-life pugilist Micky Ward. Wahlberg, for good or bad, has to play second fiddle in his own movie because Christian Bale and Melissa Leo (oh, and those sisters!) take over completely. Scenery? Oh, it's chewed.
Bale certainly does a tremendous job of portraying a drug addict and former star boxer cum trainer. He, as always, is a remarkably committed actor and this is HIS film. And that's how Dicky Eklund would want it.
So if you're in the mood to hear about an authentic boxing picture (complete with a sexualized Amy Adams), the 58th episode of Scoring At The Movies is your welterweight champion of the world.

Ep. 57 - Rocky 2
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
What? Another podcast about Rocky on this channel? As the Stallion himself would say (and he would say it often), absolutely. This makes 3 out of 57 episodes of Scoring At The Movies (that's 5%, y'know) that have made the run across Philly to punch and/or pack some meat, to fly now and to improbably win boxing matches. Rocky II is a bit of a schizo movie. It's so grounded and real for an hour, then Mister Balboa turns into the Superman we would see for the next few sequels.
Ryan loves the first half (especially the hallway scene that's been discussed in other episodes), but Chris is an unabashed fan of the entire 2 hours of this boxing flick. We discuss another possible reason (besides absolute fantasy) that Rocky beats Apollo in Superfight 2 and we also devise a theory about Adrian's "win" blessing. So turn up the volume so you can hear stupid things better as we go back and forth about Sly Stallone's one that sequeled 'em all.
Hey, yo, tweet at us, y'know. We are @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies
It's an unexpected theme of Boxing Month here in August, so in 2 weeks, we'll be digging into the Irish guts of The Fighter.
