We haven't covered hockey in nearly a year and THIS is what we chose to do?! Well, in fairness, how could a Russell Crowe flick in the late '90s go wrong?
Mystery, Alaska has a terrific cast, a blockbuster-making director in Jay Roach and it was written by TV legend David E. Kelley, but their dramedy is over-stuffed and all over the place. There are tonal problems, the comedy is weak and does ANY character have a meaningful arc? Geez, we even have issues with the movie's entire concept. It sure isn't "The Mighty Ducks for adults" that we think it's trying to be. So please, for the love of Wayne Gretzky, don't let Burt Reynolds talk you into doing the slow clap, but DO fire up our gab about pond hockey.
Pedantry Alert: The outdoor game between Detroit and Toronto in Michigan's Ann Arbor Stadium drew even more people than we thought. The attendance was 105 THOUSAND people, while other cities have often drawn 60 or even 70 thousand people to their own outdoor games in football stadiums.
